Architectural Interior Illustrations

The Architectural Interior Illustrations in this section are shown in our full range of techniques and include Watercolor Interior Renderings, Interior Pen and Ink and Watercolor Interior Renderings, Opaque Interior Renderings and Conceptual Interior Renderings. We have a separate section for Digital (CG or Computer) Interior Renderings. There are two important features that make for a successful Interior Illustration. The first is how the lighting is handled as it brings focus to the center of the rendering and depicts the materials correctly. The other is accuracy of the perspective along with scale. Furnishings in a room must be the correct scale or the space may appear to be too large or too small.

Interior Architectural Renderings are considered to be the most challenging of architectural subjects.

These challenges include:

1. Spatial limitations - Unlike exterior views where the station point can be moved around to the most advantageous point of view, there are more restrictions in an interior view. Walls, columns and furnishings all work to restrict the proper placement of the “camera”.

The solution: Removal of walls and other obstacles from the computer model. This allows placement of the camera at its most advantageous position sometimes beyond the boundaries of the space so that the view “feels” right. Different lenses can be used to make sure the full scope of the view desired is included. When the interior perspective is hand drawn additional vanishing points may be introduced to “widen” the view, achieving the same effects.

2. Lighting conditions - There are usually multiple lights sources resulting in various planes reflecting and casting shadows from different light sources of differing strengths.

The solution: A comprehensive study of all lighting conditions to be sure that the focus of the rendering is properly directed.

3. Radiosity - which is the continuation of light as it bounces from one surface to the next and the next. This situation is compounded by the fact that as mentioned, there may be multiple light sources.

The Solution: Each light source needs to be calculated so that the entire Interior Illustration portrays all of the lighting effects. As in our description of Interior Animations or “Fly Throughs”, in the end we make artistic decisions that may over ride the computerized results.

4. Textures and colors - Interior Renderings are complex in that there are so many specifications that must be properly conveyed in the final Illustration.

The Solution: We scan material provided to us so that the colors, textures and patterns are reproduced faithfully in the Interior Rendering.
