Opaque Architectural Renderings
The term “Opaque” implies that there is a fuller application of pigment as opposed to watercolor which is transparent. Opaque Architectural Rendering artists employ layers of paint by hand. This allows the artist to add as much detail to an Architectural Illustration as the client desires. Pure Watercolor Renderings require the discipline to “preserve” the white of the board to bring out detail. In an Opaque Illustration, the brightest colors can be applied over what is already painted.
Opaque renderings have come to be known by various names over time, including:
- Gouache Renderings
- Acrylic Renderings
- Casein Renderings
- Tempera Renderings (or Egg Tempera)
